Short answer: A near miss is a losing spin that looks close to a win, such as two scatters with the third just off screen. It is a loss like any other, decided when you pressed spin.

Why they feel meaningful

The brain treats a near miss more like a win than a loss, which encourages another spin. That response is well documented.

Why they are not

Reel positions are set by the random number generator. A scatter one row above the window is no nearer to landing next time than one that was nowhere in sight.

What the rules say

British rules prohibit games from presenting a return below the stake as a win, and from features that give a false impression of control.
