Respins are the engine of hold and win: three respins that reset each time a new symbol locks.

Short answer: A respin spins some reels again at no cost while others are held. It is triggered by the game, usually by a particular symbol, and is not the same as a free spin.

Respin or free spin

A free spin is a whole new spin of all reels. A respin keeps part of the previous result and re-rolls the rest, so it has a specific aim: completing what is already on screen.

The clearest example

Starburst. A wild on reels two, three or four expands to fill its reel and triggers one respin with that reel held. Another wild repeats it, up to three times. That is the whole feature of a slot with a 500x ceiling.
